Prebiotics – What is it?

07

While probiotics are very effective, prebiotics have proven to be even more effective. Prebiotics are basically nutrients that feed the friendly bacteria in the digestive system, which stimulate their growth to spread more to have control over the gastrointestinal tract.

Prebiotics are soluble fibre but they are not very easily digested by the body. Instead they are consumed by the beneficial bacteria in order to help them function properly. Prebiotics are basically foods that feed the healthy bacteria inside the intestine, and they help these bacteria to grow and spread to keep the bowel healthy and to improve the overall health of the digestive system. The reason that prebiotics are so effective is due to the fact that the digestive system cannot actually absorb the prebiotics, but the beneficial bacteria can. When you consume prebiotics, they will pass straight through the stomach undigested and reach the small intestine and colon to be fermented by the beneficial bacteria.

Prebiotics provide a great deal of nutrition to the probiotic flora. Intestinal flora health is critical for our health, which is why it is so beneficial to take regular prebiotic supplements or ingest them in their natural form.

The most common prebiotic supplement is oligosaccharide. There are many types of oligosaccharide and the higher the purity of oligosaccharide, the better its prebiotic effect. Happy Oligo® is a prebiotic made from organic corn and plant plumule, and it consists of 97.5% purity of isomalto oligosaccharide.

Both prebiotics and probiotics help to improve the functioning of the intestine, but each in a different way. Where prebiotics work to nurture the proper growth of intestinal bacteria, probiotics directly introduce bacteria to reinforce the colonies that are already working to keep the gastrointestinal system functioning properly.
